To the Dogs or Whoever

Some music I’ve been getting into recently, fyi…

Wilco
A couple of months ago I bought their new album, Sky Blue Sky, after hearing ‘Hate it Here’ on some program on them on Channel 4. I’d been looking for more bands that play that kind of acoustic country Americana soul stuff that I like and this ticked those boxes. But it’s also a bit of a guitarists album; some of the solos on there are pretty technically good, and the songwriting is really nice. Particularly the aforementioned ‘Hate it Here’, with it’s lyrics about dealing with breaking up (“What am I gonna do when I run out of shirts to fold?/What am I gonna do when I run out of lawn to mow”) and the first track ‘Either Way;’ with it’s cracking guitar solos. Nice. Also in the last few days bought their first two albums (I’m gonna go through the chronologically), ‘AM’ and ‘Being There’, which are a lot more country and acousticcy.

Josh Ritter
Been a big fan of this guy since I saw him at The End of the Road Festival in September last year (in fact I’m going to this year’s one next weekend). His new album, The Historical Conquests of... has only just come out in the US, and I wanted it so bad I got it on import – it’s not out until 1st October over here. It’s brilliant, an amazing step forward from last year’s ‘The Animal Years’, and I’m gutted that he’s only playing two nights in the UK and they’re both sold out. Download ‘Empty Hearts’ and ‘Right Moves’ to get a taste. I can’t be arsed to find any links to them, it shouldn’t take too long for you to find them. Here’s his myspace anyway.

That’ll do for now. What you listening to?

Foals, Architecture in Helsinki, iLiKETRAiNS (no surprise there) and Joy Division at the moment.

I have a load of Wilco stuff here but I found it a bit dreary :(

Horses for courses I guess.

I like dreary :P

I also forgot to mention Rilo Kiley - the new album is awesome.

Hang on - you're calling Wilco dreary whilst openly admitting to listening to Joy Division?

Yep :D

Whatchugonnadoaboutit?

I actually thought on the way home from work that you might comment on that.

Have you heard Cherry Ghost? Thought you might like 'em.

Their names comes from a Wilco song. Counts for summat dunt it?

just seen these two comments...yes I have heard of cherry ghost, and I quite like them; although the singer sounds like he's trying too hard to sound gruff.

But yeah, not bad
